    Key takeaways

    • Reb-M is extracted from the stevia leaf; sucralose is synthesized from sugar in a lab.
    • Both are zero-calorie and regulator-approved — the difference is origin, taste, and how comfortable you are drinking them daily.
    • Most zero-sugar energy drinks use sucralose; ELITE uses plant-extracted Reb-M.

Pick up almost any zero-sugar energy drink and the sweetener is sucralose. Pick up an ELITE and it's Reb-M. Both are zero-calorie — but they're very different ingredients.

    What each one is

Sucralose is made by chemically modifying sucrose — three hydroxyl groups are replaced with chlorine atoms, producing a compound about 600× sweeter than sugar that the body barely metabolizes. It's the default sweetener of the zero-sugar energy drink category.

Reb-M (rebaudioside M) is a steviol glycoside extracted from the leaf of Stevia rebaudiana. It's roughly 200–300× sweeter than sugar, calorie-free, and the cleanest-tasting glycoside in the leaf. ELITE's Reb-M is plant-extracted, not fermentation-produced.

What the research conversation looks like

Both sweeteners are considered safe by regulators at typical intakes. The nuance is the pattern of use: the WHO's 2023 guideline advised against relying on non-sugar sweeteners as a long-term weight-management strategy, and energy drinks are a near-daily habit for most people who buy them. If you're drinking one can most days, the sweetener line is worth reading.

    Which drinks use which

Sucralose sweetens most of the zero-sugar category, including Celsius, Alani Nu and GHOST. ELITE is sweetened exclusively with plant-extracted Reb-M — zero sugar, zero artificial sweeteners, zero sugar alcohols.

    Frequently asked questions

    Is sucralose safe?

Regulators including the FDA consider sucralose safe at typical intakes. The open questions concern heavy, long-term daily use — which is exactly how energy drinks are consumed.

    Which energy drinks use sucralose?

Most zero-sugar energy drinks, including Celsius, Alani Nu and GHOST. ELITE is sweetened with plant-extracted Reb-M instead.

    Does Reb-M have calories?

No. Reb-M is calorie-free and does not raise blood sugar, which is why ELITE stays at 0 g sugar and 10 calories per can.
